Iowa State University Extension has several displays on sustainable agriculture topics which are available for use at conferences and other events Each display consists of photos and captions with velcro backing intended to be arranged on a 4-foot by 8-foot space. These displays and free-standing table-top display boards may be borrowed free of charge. Handouts are also available with most of the displays. Contact Jerry DeWitt, 2104 Agronomy, 515 294 7836, jdewitt@iastate.edu, for information on borrowing a display.
Display topics:
Sustainable Agriculture. This display briefly explains what is meant by
sustainable agriculture and provides some examples of sustainable agriculture
practices and projects.
Alternatives for Pork Production. This display describes the use of hoop
houses for finishing hogs and deep-bedded systems and pasture for farrowing.
These production alternatives have lower capital costs and more production
flexibility than confinement systems. In addition, animals show fewer behavioral
signs of stress.
Food With the Farmers Face. This display describes local food systems,
including farmers markets, community supported agriculture, and direct marketing
from the farm. Quotes from farmers and consumers illustrate some of the
advantages of these alternative marketing approaches. A map of local food system
options in Iowa allows viewers to see what is available in their county, or to
add information about other options.
Community Supported Agriculture. This display describes CSA through
farmer and member quotes. A map of Iowa illustrates the rapid growth of CSA in
the state in the past 4 years.
Video Resources for Sustainable Agriculture. This display highlights some
of the videos on various aspects of sustainable agriculture that are available
for rental or purchase.
Composting. This display describes a community project to combine chicken
manure with residential yard waste to create a soil amendment.
